We left Trevour and Julie's wonderful hospitality about 8:00 AM this morning and made good time across to Feilding where we met up with Suzanne and Gareth (Rob's neice) for coffee.
If you're going to visit Feilding then make sure you do on a Friday - It's sale day so you can pick youself up a nice line of Heifers or a mob of sheep either of which will eat as much grass as you can grow and you can also take in the "Farmers" Market" in the Square. Our ride out of the CBD took us right past the Saleyards and it was so good to smell and see that this weekly happening is still happening in this day and age. Feilding is a rural service centre like what much of New Zealand used to be and long may it continue to be just that. Yes you can have flash hospitality venues, bars and cafes co-exist beside the traditional bread and butter make up of the town.
Gareth had phoned ahead to the Cycle Station Surgey in Palmerston North to check they had sun-glasses for me and lube (chain) for Rob and Ruth. It was good easy riding all morning and again we made good time in to PN. PN is certainy larger than what I had envisaged as it was a good 8 km from the edge of town to the bike shop. I got new glasses and Rob his lube.
We then had a leisurely lunch before heading off over the Pahiatua Track which involved a 400 meter climb and good close up views of the Turbines of the Wind Farm. Again we seem to always pick the heat of the day to do our toughest climbs! Mind you that is preferable to doing them in wind and rain.
We were booked in to the "Post Office Hotel" for the night (most reasonable $95 for the three of us) and started looking out for it (thinking old converted Post Office) - we rode past the old Banks and the the old Post Office (all closed and vacant) so it was then over to Mrs Google and she said it was a further 300 meters along the street. We were all surprised to see a 1970's Tavern/Hotel appear.
We didn't complain and here we are.
